A tripping breaker is not a malfunction. It is a protective device doing what it was installed to do. The useful question is not how to stop it tripping but what it is protecting you from.
That reframing matters, because the most common “fix” people reach for, a larger breaker, removes the protection rather than addressing the cause.
What a breaker actually protects
Not your appliance. Not the panel. The wire in the wall.
Every circuit uses conductors of a particular size, and each size has a safe current-carrying capacity. The breaker is chosen to interrupt current before the conductors exceed it. Fit a 30 amp breaker to a circuit wired for 15 amps and the wire will heat up well past its rating before the breaker ever notices.
This is why “it kept tripping so I put a bigger one in” is a dangerous sentence.
The five causes
1. Overload
Too much connected load. The classic case is a kitchen circuit running a microwave and a kettle simultaneously. The breaker trips after a short delay, because thermal overload takes a moment to build.
Fix: redistribute the load, or add a dedicated circuit for the high-draw appliance.
2. Short circuit
A hot conductor contacting a neutral or ground. Current spikes enormously and the breaker trips instantly, every time, with no delay.
Fix: find the fault. This one does not resolve itself and should not be repeatedly reset.
3. Ground fault
Current leaking to ground, often through moisture or damaged insulation. GFCI devices detect very small imbalances and trip.
Fix: locate the moisture path. Outdoor covers, fixture gaskets, and damaged buried cable are the usual culprits.
4. Arc fault
AFCI breakers detect the electrical signature of arcing, which is a fire risk that ordinary breakers do not respond to at all. Frequent AFCI trips often indicate damaged cable or a loose connection.
Fix: investigate. AFCI trips are sometimes nuisance trips from certain appliances, but they should not be assumed to be.
5. A failing breaker
Breakers are mechanical and wear with each trip. An aged breaker can become over-sensitive, or, considerably worse, stop tripping altogether.
Fix: test and replace.
How to narrow it down yourself
Some useful observations before you call:
- Does it trip instantly, or after a delay? Instant suggests a short. Delayed suggests overload.
- Does it trip only when a particular appliance runs? That points at the appliance or its circuit share.
- Does it trip with everything unplugged? If yes, the fault is in the wiring rather than anything connected.
- Did it start after something changed? New appliance, recent work, a storm, water ingress.
That last question resolves more cases than any instrument.
The failure mode nobody notices
Everything above concerns breakers that trip too often. The opposite problem gets far less attention and matters more.
A breaker that no longer trips under overload leaves the circuit unprotected, and there is no symptom at all. This is the core of the long-standing concern about certain obsolete panel makes, where breakers have a documented history of failing to trip when they should.
If your panel is one of those types, it is worth having tested even with nothing apparently wrong.
When to stop resetting
Once. Reset it once. If it trips again immediately, stop.
A breaker that trips the moment you reset it has found a fault it will not tolerate, and repeatedly forcing it removes the only protection on that circuit. At that point, leave it off and get it diagnosed.
