Layered lighting
Lighting design generally works in three layers. Ambient light fills the room. Task light illuminates specific work surfaces. Accent light picks out particular features. A room lit only by ambient light feels flat; one lit only by task light feels patchy.
Most complaints about a room being poorly lit are actually about missing layers rather than insufficient total output. Adding a brighter lamp to a single central fixture rarely fixes it.
Fixture swaps versus new layouts
Replacing a fixture where one already exists is a contained job. Adding fixtures where none exist means running cable, cutting openings, and often adding or moving switches. A substantially different scope.
One thing worth knowing before a fixture swap in an older home: the existing connection is frequently where deteriorated wiring shows up. Fixture terminations run warm, and older insulation at that point is often brittle. It is common for a straightforward swap to reveal a connection that needs remaking.
Outdoor lighting
Outdoor work has additional requirements: fixtures rated for wet locations, weather-resistant GFCI-protected outlets, and appropriate methods for any buried cable. Landscape lighting is often low voltage, which changes the requirements again but does not make the supply side unregulated.

What actually goes wrong
Insufficient general lighting
Many rooms were built with a single central fixture, which produces uneven light and shadow. The fix is usually a layout of several fixtures rather than a brighter lamp in one.
No task lighting where work happens
Kitchen counters, workbenches, and desks need light directed onto the surface. A ceiling fixture behind you puts your own shadow on the work.
Fixtures unsuitable for their location
Bathrooms, showers, and outdoor locations require fixtures rated for damp or wet conditions. Standard fixtures in those locations deteriorate and become a hazard.
Insulation contact restrictions
Recessed fixtures that are not IC-rated must be kept clear of insulation. This is frequently ignored during retrofits and is a genuine fire risk in insulated ceilings.
Inadequate support for heavy fixtures
Chandeliers and large fixtures need a box rated for the weight. Standard boxes are not, and fixtures do come down.

Lighting Installation questions
How many recessed lights does a room need?
It depends on ceiling height, room dimensions, the beam angle of the fixtures, surface colours, and what the room is used for. A common approach spaces fixtures at roughly half the ceiling height apart, but that is a starting point rather than a rule. A room used for detailed work needs more light than one used for relaxing, and over-lighting a living space is a real and common mistake.
Can recessed lighting go into any ceiling?
Most, but the details matter. Joist positions constrain placement. Insulated ceilings need IC-rated fixtures. Fire-rated ceilings, typically between floors in multi-family buildings, need fixtures that maintain the rating. Concrete ceilings are a different job entirely. An electrician will check the ceiling construction before committing to a layout.
Should I switch everything to LED?
Generally yes, on both energy and lifespan grounds. The caveats are dimming compatibility, which needs the dimmer matched to the lamps, and colour temperature consistency. Mixing lamps from different batches or brands in one room produces visibly different whites. If you are replacing gradually, note what you bought.
Do I need a permit for lighting work?
Replacing a fixture on an existing circuit usually does not. Adding new circuits, new fixture locations, or altering wiring typically does, though requirements vary by jurisdiction. Your electrician will know the local position, and for anything beyond a straight swap it is worth asking.
